Keith
great article on pen boxes. I have made about a dozen so far but this looks a lot easier than how I make mine. Hinges the same will now make mine in the same way. and like you say you have to make them in batches. I now have a bigger router as I burnt the last one out doing the groove for pen about 10 years ago.
ps. have just started turning again so can not wait to make the boxes.
thanks again for great article.

Hey Keith, no real problems with the routing as long as I concentrated. On one, I lost concentration for a second and forgot to keep the router tight against the fence - as a result the groove was a little wiggly! Not too good for a straight pen. Oh well. Thanks again. Ciaran

Ciaran, did you have any problems with the routing? You had asked earlier about the router feed direction.

Ciaran, that's a great idea! I'll be sure to mark the magnets the next time I make some pen boxes. I've added your idea to the blog entry, just in case someone doesn't read as far down as this reply to your comment. Thanks!

Hi Keith, I have now had a go at making the boxes and, as a first attempt, they turned out not too bad.
The first one I made, however, I forgot what you said about gluing in the magnets one at a time and, even though I concentrated really hard, I did manage to glue one of the magnets in the wrong way around and the magnets repelled leaving the box perminantly open. Oh well!
To make sure I got the rest of magnets the right way around in the remaining boxes, I arranged the magnets in pairs, stuck together, and then used a perminant marker to put a small dot on the outside edges - i.e. the edges that go into the holes. It was then easy to identify the 'right' side of the magnets. Thought you could be interested. I hope I explained this clearly enough. Thanks again Ciaran

Hi Keith -

I wanted to add my thanks for sharing this information. I'm in the process of making some special fountain pens and plan on using this info to make the boxes. I had planned on purchasing some - but I have not found anything on the market that comes close to these.

It is so nice when you discover someone willing to share!
