I have this bad habit of expecting every piece I take off the lathe to be a masterpiece. I do this knowing full well it’s not going to happen. Even so there is still a twinge of disappointment every time it happens. Part of the problem is that I’m my own worst critic. I’m I recently got a hollowing tool and had a chance to take it for a test drive. It was quite the experience and I can see I’ve just started on yet another steep learning curve. It’s like decorating your living room through the key hole in the front door! This was my first attempt, If you are looking for specifics on how to turn a bowl then this is not the book you need. However, if you are looking for information about what makes a bowl look and feel good, I’d highly recommend this book. This book is about form and what you can do with it. A friend of mine had given me an Oak burl. When he gave it to me he mentioned he had been thinking of making a winged bowl from it. A couple of days ago it caught my eye and I decided to have a try at making a winged bowl from it.

Continue reading … As I’ve started turning bigger items on the lathe and also started power turning I’ve felt the need for dust collection at the lathe and also an easy way to clean up all the wood chips. I have a dust collector, a Harbor Freight, but it is already hooked up to more machines than I got a vacuum pump!! I’m real excited about it as I’ve been wanting one for a long time. Out of the blue a friend of mine said he had picked some up at an auction and did I want one. I’ll be swapping some nice bowl blanks from Zambezi Exotics in return. There I had the opportunity to photograph some bowls turned by Tom Grzybala from wood that I supplied him from Zambezi Exotics. Tom is a member of my Woodturning Club and I’ve always admired his work. The first bowl is from Hard Pear. The wood is beautiful and the shape of the bowl is really I didn’t get much shop time yesterday but I managed to turn another sphere. This one is made from Narra. I used the leftover piece from a pepper mill I made for a Christmas present. Narra is a beautiful wood. It is in the same family of trees as padauk.
