The Journey

I have this bad habit of expecting every piece I take off the lathe to be a masterpiece. I do this knowing full well it’s not going to happen. Even so there is still a twinge of disappointment every time it happens.

Part of the problem is that I’m my own worst critic. I’m sure this is a trait that many craftsman share. The bigger part of the problem is I need to constantly remind myself to enjoy the journey, not just the destination. Point A and point B are nice, but in reality the real pleasure should be derived in the journey that takes you from point A to point b. The process. That satisfying feel of a nice smooth cut with the bowl gouge. Watching the sparks fly over the tip of the gouge as you sharpen it. The smell and feel of the wood. The grain in the wood coming alive as you sand and apply the finish. The quiet time alone.

Note to self, remember to enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
