Here is a neat video of a wooden mast being turned for the reproduction vessel of Columbus Nina. The mast is being turned by The Spar Shop. From their site: The Spar Shop at the Historical Seaport custom-builds wooden masts, yards, booms, and gaffs for large sailboats, yachts, and sailing ships, as well I mentioned a while back that a friend of mine had given me a Vacuum Pump. My first goal for the pump was to build a vacuum chuck system for my lathe. This broke down into three parts; fittings and air filter for the vacuum pump, a rotary adaptor and the chucks. You can click on any of the images to see a larger version. I started with a piece of spalted sweetgum just over 2″ x 2″ square. I placed it on the lathe between centers and turned it round. I “Seggy” is a video by Malcolm Tibbetts. It shows the making of a segmented vessel. More than that it is also a story of hope and persistence. I built this one for a friend in return for a favor he did for me. I call the design “Unraveled”. The wood is a piece of curly Mango from Hawaii and it is inlaid with aluminum.
You can click on I ordered another tool from Woodchuck Lathe Tools. This tool has a 15mm square carbide cutter. Today I made a handle for it using Zambezi Teak from Zambezi Exotics. The handle was pretty easy to make as the tool comes with a round tang. After rounding the blank I held it at the headstock I just finished making this pen blank. I’ll be mailing it off in the morning. It is part of a pen swap I’m participating in. I call the design “Nazca Lines”. The wood is a piece of curly Koa from Hawaii and it is inlaid with aluminum.
You can I spent some time this weekend making up a batch of pens with an Easter theme for my website, Syzygy Pens. I’m probably cutting it a little close as Easter is just around the corner, but I thought that what ever didn’t sell would be good for Christmas later this year. Here are a |
