As you can see, once again Mother Nature did a beautiful job. The spalting in the sweet gum is amazing. The bark had fallen off the piece before I turned it, so I needed to define the rim. I choose to do that with my wood burning tool. I used two different nibs. I first burnt a random pattern of dark dots with the writing tip. Then I went over the entire rim with the shading tip and blackened it completely.

That turned out beautiful. Did you sand near the rim after burning, or does the burning produce a crisp edge without any sanding? What did you finish the bowl with, lacquer?
Thanks Bill. I did all the sanding, both the sides and the rim, before I started burning. The bowl was finished with a couple of coats of Deft lacquer.
