Chatter Tool Results

I finally got a chance to play with the chatter tool I made.  My initial experiments were pretty disappointing.   The tool was “screeching” as it is supposed to, but I only seemed to be able to put spiral grooves on the test piece.   My first thought was that the blade was not thick

Homemade Chatter Tool

I’ve been wanting to try some different embellishment techniques, one of which was chatter work.  However I kept on balking at the price of a new chatter tool.  I decided to make my own.  It cost me $3.00 and a hour or two on a Sunday afternoon.

I got a 1/2″ x 10″ nipple

First attempt at coring with the McNaughton Center Saver

First of all, I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Weekend! I’ve had my share of labor lately, a busy couple of weeks has kept me away from both my workshop and my blog.

I got some much needed shop time on Labor Day afternoon and decided to get some

Vacuum Chuck

I mentioned a while back that a friend of mine had given me a Vacuum Pump. My first goal for the pump was to build a vacuum chuck system for my lathe. This broke down into three parts; fittings and air filter for the vacuum pump, a rotary adaptor and the chucks.

Handle for new tool

I ordered another tool from Woodchuck Lathe Tools. This tool has a 15mm square carbide cutter. Today I made a handle for it using Zambezi Teak from Zambezi Exotics. The handle was pretty easy to make as the tool comes with a round tang. After rounding the blank I held it at the headstock

Dust Collector

As I’ve started turning bigger items on the lathe and also started power turning I’ve felt the need for dust collection at the lathe and also an easy way to clean up all the wood chips. I have a dust collector, a Harbor Freight, but it is already hooked up to more machines than

Vacuum Pump

I got a vacuum pump!! I’m real excited about it as I’ve been wanting one for a long time. Out of the blue a friend of mine said he had picked some up at an auction and did I want one. I’ll be swapping some nice bowl blanks from Zambezi Exotics in return.
